  • Bellringing at Southam

    Southam Parish Church Bells
Sunday ringing is currently half an hour before the 10:00am service, and half an hour before the 6:30pm service.
Practice night is on Tuesday, from 7:30 to 9:30pm. New and old ringers welcome.
There are Ringing outings, competitions and other social pastimes.
The parish church of St James, Southam, has a ring of eight bells, the tenor bell (heaviest) being 15cwt 1 quarter 25lb (788kg) in the note of E. Their history is diverse: prior to 1863, the ring comprised of five bells, by four different founders, ranging in age from 1596 to 1676. In 1863 a new treble was added and the first two of the old ring were recast, thus forming a new ring of six. Then in 1913, two new trebles were added, and the back four of the original five were retuned, forming the present eight.
The ringers of Southam are always pleased to welcome visiting ringers, and also non-ringers whose curiosity prompts them to visit the belfry.

  • - Who?
Southam & District Lions Club, formed in 1971, is part of Lions Clubs International, a world wide voluntary service organisation with over 34,000 clubs in 155 countries, comprising more than 1,500,000 members, making it the largest organisation of its kind in the world. While each Lions Club gives priority to the needs of its local community the Association is truly international with no religious or political affiliations of any description. As Southam is not a large town, the "District" in the name is very important, since it describes an area which includes the villages of Long Itchington, Harbury, Bishops Itchington, Napton, Stockton, Ufton, Marton, Priors Marston, Priors Hardwick, Ladbroke, Deppers Bridge, Fenny Compton, Northend and Knightcote.
    - Where?
We serve in any way we can, and to the best of our ability, to what we see to be the needs of the community in which we live, in whatever form it appears necessary, and to whatever extent our resources of time and money permit.
    - When?
We receive requests of all natures, and sometimes it takes a while to find the right answer or right person for the job. We can, and do, contact other organisations if they are better able to assist - all in an effort to provide speedy help. All this is done in our spare time; there are no full time organisers. As an International organisation Lions are able to provide urgent assistance in times of disaster through the Lions International Foundation, a trust fund established by regular contributions from Lions Clubs throughout the world.
    - How?
Money is raised from you the public to support our projects. All monies raised in this way are entirely used for charity. Nothing at all is deducted for Club administration. All members subscribe to their own administration costs. Since 1971, Southam & District Lions Club has raised over a hundred thousand pounds.
    - Why?
The effort contributed by a collection of men (and frequently their families too) for serving their local community provides a fellowship second to none - an important aspect of our Club life.
    - What?
Our activities include - supplying furniture to those in need, assisting families in distress. Organising and running fund raising events sometimes with other local organisations. From the money raised, responding to both local and national appeals for assistance or donations. Providing equipment to hospitals, clinics, pre-school groups schools etc. Organising concerts for the elderly. Sponsor ship of MedicAlert, Project Sight First and other quality of life enhancing projects.
If YOU want to know more, or wish to join, please contact :   Jim Steele  Tel 01926 813577 / 07799 496265 who would be only too pleased to get in touch with you personally .  For Local Lions News Click Here
